What Is a Tech Pack, and Why Does Every Brand Live by One?

Every garment you have ever bought started as an idea. Somewhere between that idea and the finished piece on the rack, there was a document that made it possible: the tech pack.

If you want to work in fashion, whether as a designer, product developer, or brand owner, the tech pack is one of the most important tools you will ever learn to create.

So, what is a tech pack?

A tech pack (short for technical package) is a detailed set of instructions that tells a manufacturer exactly how to make a garment. Think of it as the blueprint for a piece of clothing. A good tech pack leaves nothing open to interpretation.

A sketch shows what a garment looks like. A tech pack explains how it is built.

What goes inside a tech pack

Every brand formats theirs a little differently, but most tech packs include:

  • Technical flats: Clean, black and white drawings of the front, back, and sometimes side of the garment, with every seam, pocket, and detail clearly marked.

  • Measurement specs: A chart showing points of measure (chest, waist, sleeve length, and so on) with exact measurements and allowed tolerances.

  • Grading: How those measurements change across each size in the range.

  • Bill of materials: Every component needed to make the garment, including fabric, lining, thread, zippers, buttons, labels, and hang tags.

  • Construction details: Stitch types, seam finishes, and step by step notes on how pieces come together.

  • Colourways: Each colour option, often matched to a specific colour standard.

  • Labelling and packaging: Care labels, brand labels, folding instructions, and how the item should be packed and shipped.

Why brands cannot work without one

It removes guesswork. Factories often produce for many brands at once, sometimes on the other side of the world. A tech pack makes sure your vision is understood clearly, even across languages and time zones.

It saves time and money. Every unclear detail can lead to an incorrect sample, and every extra sample costs money and delays production. A strong tech pack means fewer rounds of revisions.

It makes accurate costing possible. Manufacturers use the tech pack to quote prices. Without one, quotes are estimates at best.

It keeps quality consistent. When the first production run and the hundredth come from the same document, customers get the same fit and finish every time.

It protects the brand. A tech pack is a record of exactly what was agreed. If something arrives wrong, it is the reference point for resolving the issue.

A skill employers look for

Brands of every size rely on people who can build clear, accurate tech packs. It is a core skill for roles like product developer, technical designer, production coordinator, and sourcing specialist. For independent designers, it is often the difference between a collection that stays on paper and one that actually gets made.

Learn it at The Cut

Our Product Development, Sourcing & Manufacturing Certificate teaches you how to take a product from concept to completion. Over 14 weeks, you will learn textile science, prototyping, and garment construction, then put it all together by preparing industry standard technical specification packages. You will also learn how to source materials and labour locally and abroad, and how to build costing and production plans with profit in mind.

Whether you are launching your own label or building a career with an established brand, knowing how to create a tech pack puts you in the room where garments really get made.
